Measuring Kageno’s Success: The Balanced Scorecard

The "Kageno Model" is designed to improve conditions by educating and empowering community members through a web of sustainable interdependent programs. This broad set of diverse programs is monitored in both trend form (are we getting better over time?) and snapshot form (where are we right now relative to our annual goal?).

The Balanced Scorecard is far more than an accountability tool. It is a way of monitoring each individual program and assessing whether they are making an impact that is different from expectations. By monitoring these impacts, the scorecard guides Kageno’s allocation of resources by identifying programs that need to be energized in order to preserve the balanced community development approach.

Balanced Scorecard

Goals like improved living standards, opportunity, and hope, can be difficult to measure. When they are measurable, statistical causality (what causes a result – was it Kageno or some other phenomenon?) can be blurry. Therefore, Kageno’s work is most clearly measured on the immediate results of interventions, which are easily measured on metrics like number of vaccinations, graduating computer class clients, number of trees planted, or money collected via eco-tourism. Placing the Kageno Scorecard at every step of the delivery process helps Kageno analyze strategic decisions, and measure performance. Successfully executed interventions result in improved living standards.
