2006
- Kageno Executive Director / Co-founder Dr. Frank Andolino, leads a group of six Texans to the Kageno Kenya project site. The group from Texas facilitates sponsorship of a new school and library, along with a feeding program for the 186 children who attend the school. The Kageno Kids Program is launched at a party to raise awareness for the Kageno Kids Art & Cultural Exchange. More than $6000 is raised.
- Pearson, an international media company, donates books for the new school library. Two teenage students from New York City donate funds to hire a school nurse and purchase medicine.
- The Dreyfus Health Foundation and Kageno sponsor the first Partnership for Better Health workshop.
2005
- On April 28th the project is officially reopened under the Kageno Kenya name. The ceremony marks the official opening of the Kate Spade Computer Center, the Plasse Health Clinic and VCT, and the Rusinga Island Clean Water Project, and is attended by representatives from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the U.S. Embassy in Kenya, and myriad Kenyan government officials. +The first Kageno “Not-So-Silent Auction” is held for nearly 250 supporters of Kageno and endorsed by Meryl Streep, Doctor Paul Farmer, and Jacqueline Murekatete to raise awareness and funds for Kageno Kenya and to launch Kageno Rwanda.
- Kageno leadership meets with a myriad of Rwandan national ministries and leaders to begin relationship building and survey the Rwanda project.
- The annual commemoration of AIDS World Day drew over 1200 participants.
2004
- Latrines and water tanks are constructed.
- Kageno begins work with UNDP on a large-scale reforestation project funded by a U.N. grant.
- Money raised from the first U.S. based Kageno fundraiser is pooled with grant funds awarded by Peace Corps/USAID to fund completion and supply of the Plasse Health Clinic and Voluntary Counseling and Testing Center (VCT).
2003
- A representative of the U.S. Embassy performs a site visit to the Kenya project, which results in new funds for the ICC.
- The German Development Agency (DED) approves funding for a sanitation project, which includes the construction of latrines and a clean water project.
- Executive Director Frank Andolino first meets with the original project founders while on a trip to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. The group goes on to formulate the current organizational model. The center and project are renamed Kageno, meaning “ A Place of Hope” in Dholuo.
- The second annual commemoration of world AIDS Day on Rusinga Island is held. Hundreds of people turn out to receive the HIV/AIDS message, and participate in sporting events, music, and videos.
2002
- Alphonce Okuku and Peace Corps volunteer Rob Place expanded the youth group to include a computer project and crafts project housed within the ICC. These programs help develop job skills as well as generate income for those involved.
- The youth group hosts its first “Youth Against AIDS Day”, handing out red ribbons and educating the public.
2001
- Alphonce Okuku and concerned community members form a youth group to educate young people about the AIDS epidemic that was decimating their community.
